Before you apply, please review:
First, you’ll create an account for free to complete the online course application. This includes some screening tests for required skills and aptitudes, such as typing speed and English grammar skills. You’ll also receive information about course expectations, schedule options, and equipment requirements.
You can complete the application at any time to find out whether you qualify for the Basic Skills Course—no need to wait for a new training cohort to open.
If you already have a sponsor (such as a school or agency that plans to employ you), you’ll indicate that in your application. If you don’t yet have a sponsor, you can note that as well, as we may be able to help connect you with potential employers once you qualify.
Qualified applicants are added to our notification list and will be invited to enroll when registration opens for the next cohort (typically early summer or fall).
If you qualify for the Basic Skills Course, you’ll see a prompt to submit the course fee and select a start date. However, we recommend holding off on payment until new start dates are posted for the next cohort.
When a new enrollment period is scheduled (typically in early summer or fall), we’ll email qualified applicants with available start dates. At that point, you can complete your payment and officially reserve your place in the cohort.
Before your start date, we’ll send you a small workbook and software installation instructions by mail.
The Basic Skills Course is a distance-learning program that usually takes about 2–3 months to complete. You’ll work closely with a dedicated instructor who provides individualized feedback and guidance throughout the course.
You’ll need a typing speed of 60+ word per minute (WPM) without errors, as well as basic computer knowledge. You’ll also need strong listening and memory abilities, and excellent English proficiency.
Yes, it’s important to consider your physical well-being since live transcription involves intensive typing! Individuals with a history of arm or wrist pain are at higher risk for repetitive motion injury. If you experience pain during the course, your course will be paused so you can consult with a medical professional.
The registration fee for the Basic Skills Course is $899 (USD).
Enrollment is limited to sponsored candidates—that is, individuals whose employer or prospective employer agrees to support their training and provide supervised practice opportunities.
If you qualify for the course, your sponsor will see a prompt to pay the course fee so you can select a start date. Since new cohorts are scheduled only at certain times of the year, we may recommend that your sponsor wait to submit payment until a there’s a confirmed start date that works for you.
In rare cases, we may consider self-pay candidates who can verify in writing that they have a transcription job lined up. Payment plans and limited financial assistance are available only for those approved self-pay cases.
A dedicated TypeWell teacher will remain available to you, both during and after the training. They will send you (and your sponsor) frequent performance updates, test scores, and individualized feedback via email. Our learning platform will also send you automated emails throughout the course with important scheduling reminders.
You should arrange for potential technical support needs in advance, but we’re happy to help by phone or email.
TypeWell offers a warm and welcoming community with opportunities for mentorship and networking.
