Application
To be eligible for the TypeWell Basic Skills transcribing course or the Refresher course, a candidate must complete our online application process, which starts at the bottom of this page.
The application process takes 30 to 40 minutes, and requires the candidate to set up a free online account at our website.
The application process gives the candidate detailed information about the job of a transcriber, student qualifications, the components of the transcribing course, the equipment needed, and the course schedule.
The candidate's skills are also measured during the application process in our listening and typing tests.
See the required skills.
Completion of the application process does not guarantee that we will accept a person into the transcribing course.
Only the most qualified candidates will be accepted into the course.
Sponsor
A candidate may name a sponsor.
The sponsor pays the course fee, and after the successful compilation of the course may hire the candidate to provide transcribing services.
We send information to the sponsor throughout the course about the performance of the sponsored student, starting with the candidate's application test scores and continuing until the final grade and performance report.
Having a sponsor involved helps a candidate develop the skills in the course, and thus become a good transcriber.
Payment
If we accept a candidate's application, the candidate is eligible to enroll in the course.
The cost of enrolling in the transcribing course is $489.
Payment is by credit card only.
The candidate may pay, or may enter the email address of a sponsor who may pay.
If the sponsor decides to enroll the candidate in the course, the sponsor can either make the payment directly (by clicking on the secure payment link in the email), or can forward the email to someone else who will pay, such as an accounting department.
There is a lower fee for the refresher course for those who are already TypeWell transcribers and need to freshen their skills.
Enrolling and the Course Start Date
Once the course fee has been paid, we send emails to the student and sponsor confirming that the student has been admitted to the course.
The student must then sign back in to his/her online course account and complete the enrollment process.
This involves choosing a start date, telling us where to mail the course materials, and faxing to us a signed Information and Waiver sheet.
At this point, the student may choose from the list of available course start dates.
During the waiting period until the course starts, which may be from one week up to 3 months, the student prepares so that the equipment is all ready when the start date arrives.
Course Materials
The course materials will be mailed to the shipping address specified during enrollment, and will arrive a day or two before the student's scheduled start date.
The package will include instructions for downloading the course software from the Internet, and installing and activating the course software.
The package will also contain a workbook for the student to use with the lessons.
The software installation and activation are simple; but, be sure to check if your site requires that your own technician install all software.
If so, be sure to make an appointment with the technician ahead of time so there will be no delay once the software reaches your site.

If you have all of the skills listed on the Qualifications page AND you are not currently doing verbatim transcribing of any kind AND you would not be providing traditional notetaking services during the Course, then you may move on to set up your free application account.
In your account, we will tell you more about the course and the prerequisite skills.
Next read about the equipment and technical requirements of the transcribing course.
