TypeWell Version 6

This new version of TypeWell took 3 full years to develop, but the wait was worth it!  It is packed with new features for everyone.  Some highlights:
  • Experienced transcribers can now save more keystrokes with Turbo mode abbreviations.
  • Students and other readers now have the convenience of using their own computer or handheld as a reader device.
  • Coordinators can enjoy the time savings of the two simplified new linking methods, as well as being able to offer courselets as continuing education to staff transcribers.

V6 is still compatible with older versions of TypeWell, and includes all your favorite features such as Math mode, and remote linking in Premium.

Here are more details about major new features in Version 6.  To purchase, see the bottom of this page.

Expanded Linking Options

V6 includes two new linking options, Web Browser linking (in the premium version of V6) and Local linking (in all versions), that are simple to use and more reliable.  V6 drastically reduces installation difficulty, and works better with existing campus networks.  In most cases, linking set-up now takes 30 seconds and a couple of clicks.

Support for More Reader Devices

Web Browser linking (in the Premium version of V6) enables supports for new types of reader devices, which makes it easier than ever to choose the best delivery method for your transcripts.  This feature uses our web server to direct the transcript to any internet device.  The use of this service is free during 2011, and may have a nominal charge in future years.

This new system allows a simple web browser to be the complete reader system, giving a student smooth access and readability on any internet device.  Students love following a class without having that bulky extra computer on the desktop, and you'll love that there's no software to be installed!

That means that in addition to working on any type of computer (Mac, Windows, Linux), Web Browser linking works on cellphones, iPhones, tablets, iPads, netbooks, and even eBooks like the Kindle.

For coordinators, Web Browser linking also supports transcriber skill development; you can spot-check transcript quality from the office while a class is going on, by joining a session to see what the reader is seeing.

Turbo Mode

Version 6 adds a new Turbo abbreviation mode to the classic method of earlier versions.  Turbo mode is for experienced transcribers who have already mastered the original classic abbreviation.  It adds new long-word abbreviation rules to allow much shorter abbreviations (only 4 keystrokes for "abbreviation"), particularly (5 keystrokes) for those finger-twisting sesquipedalian (5 keystrokes) words.  Turbo mode is designed for the long-term transcriber who has already completely mastered the basic skills of chunking and transcribing, and is ready to further improve speed and comfort for the future.

Courselets

To boost transcribers in learning Turbo mode, we now provide the first courselet, Turbo I.  This gives a new Turbo transcriber focused lessons and practice to get up to speed right away.  This courselet is the beginning of a continuing education series of courselets for helping transcribers to maintain and extend their transcribing skills.

Dictionary Improvements

TypeWell's dictionary was already the largest and most complete in the field, but we've now more than doubled this size -- to 500,000 words!  We've improved the dictionary's overall coverage, as well as adding a full complement of capitalized words.  This includes even more complete specialized medical and scientific terms.  Here are some sample words from the 300,000 new in V6:

  • New Millennium wordsBluetooth, Schwarzenegger;
  • Collegiate wordscontextualizing, disproportionality, tricarbonyl;
  • Capitalized wordsATM, Cantonese, Kremlin, IBM, Spanglish, Taliban;
  • and many more.

You'll now have even more confidence that words, obscure or common, specialized or trendy, will expand instantly when you need them.

Undo/Redo

There'll be no more gnashing of teeth over the unintentional deletion of a paragraph or page.  Our advanced Undo/Redo feature allows transcribers (and all linked readers of course!) to recover from those accidental deletes.

New Reader Display Option

The reader display is even more streamlined with V6's new text-presentation algorithm.  Rather than showing letters as they are typed, V6 intelligently decides when a word is complete and presents only the final words -- the instant they are complete.  The result is crisp, clear reading with no distractions.
