EDUCATIONAL TRANSCRIBER I


ESSENTIAL FUNCTION

Under the supervision of a teacher or administrator, facilitates communication between hearing and hearing-impaired students and others, and between hearing-impaired staff and others, by providing educationally-appropriate transcribing and printed notes of classes and meetings as assigned. Communication facilitation may also be provided to students with other kinds of communication-restricting conditions.


DUTIES

Uses a laptop or laptops to record lectures and discussion to support the learning of communicatively-disadvantaged students, or occasionally the communication access of hearing-impaired staff members at meetings. Clearly displays the information for the students or staff members as it occurs during the class or meeting, and then provides summarized notes in printed or electronic form within 24 hours. Makes every attempt to record faithfully what has been spoken, while knowing that the text is not verbatim, but a product of condensing and summarizing the content in a meaning-for-meaning style. Varies the content of the printed or electronic notes to reflect the needs of the person(s) for whom they are intended. That is, includes only educationally-relevant information in student notes, while retaining more complete information from staff meetings. Prepares for classes by reviewing materials and adding pertinent vocabulary to the transcriber dictionary before classes or meetings.

Provides for the upkeep and general care of the laptops, printer and copier used in the completion of job assignments; assures that adequate paper and other office supplies are available for use; maintains contact with the itinerant teacher assigned to each school site in order to assure students' productive use of the service (e.g., verifying the appropriateness of the level of the notes, assuring the note distribution process is working, and the students are using the service as required). Seeks help from supervisors to deal with any problems in the classrooms or with the students served.

Adheres to the Code of Ethics for Transcribers; works 20 to 30 hours per week; works as assigned, including possible split shift schedules; accepts itinerant assignments; arrives at class as scheduled; and acts in a respectful manner to teachers and staff at all school sites.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Typing speed of 60 wpm, excellent English skills, and excellent listening skills. General knowledge and understanding of course work taught in secondary level programs. Ability to use an approved abbreviation system to assist in transcribing speech for rapid communication access. Ability to capture an average of 80% of the important information points conveyed in classes and meetings; ability to work harmoniously with teachers, students and staff. Knowledge of deafness and its effects an language acquisition and educational needs are desirable.

The skills, knowledge and abilities listed above would typically be acquired through obtaining a high school diploma or GED, and completion of a district-approved transcribing training program.

Communication facilitation may also be provided to students with other kinds of communication-restricting conditions.

Transcribes advanced classes and small and large meetings that require a higher transcribing speed and comfort with more difficult content materials than transcribers at a lower job rating. Transcribes for hearing-impaired adults on a regular basis. Clearly displays the information for the hearing-impaired personal during the class or meeting, and then provides summarized notes in printed or electronic form within 24 hours. Makes every attempt to record faithfully what has been spoken while knowing that the text is not verbatim, but a product of condensing and summarizing the content in a meaning-for-meaning style. Varies the content of the printed or electronic notes to reflect the needs of the hearing-impaired person(s) for whom they are intended. That is, includes only educationally-relevant information in student notes while retaining more complete information for staff meetings. The skills, knowledge and abilities listed above would typically be acquired through obtaining a high school diploma or GED, and completion of a district-approved transcriber training, and a minimum of one year of varied transcribing experience in a school setting.


DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This job class is distinguished from next lower level of Educational Transcriber I in the ability to regularly transcribe small and large group meetings for deaf adults, and advanced classes for students. The amount of information accurately presented while transcribing is also higher than that expected of Level I Transcribers.
