How to Download and Install Pocket TypeWell

 

 

Follow these steps to set up Pocket TypeWell on your iPAQ.

1. Download Pocket TypeWell

First, put some form of memory media into your computer, such as a diskette, a USB memory device, or a blank CD-ROM.  Suppose you use a USB memory stick.  Then, click here to download pt116.exe. When your browser asks, choose to save the file to the USB memory stick.  This will take about 10 minutes over a modem connection.

2. Install Pocket TypeWell

Insert the USB memory stick into the computer that is connected to the iPAQ on which you wish to install Pocket TypeWell. Hook up the USB cable connecting your iPAQ to the computer, and turn on the iPAQ so Hotsync is working.  Then click on the Start button in the lower left corner of your Windows screen, and click on the Run entry.  Locate the USB memory stick using Windows, and double-click on the pt116 icon.  Follow the directions to install Pocket TypeWell. 

3. Update TypeWell on the Transcriber Computer

Pocket TypeWell on the handheld will link only with a compatible version of TypeWell on the main computer.  To check if your version of TypeWell has the necessary feature, go to the Help/About menu on your main computer's TypeWell, and see if the word "Premium" appears.  If so, you're all set, and you can proceed to step 4 below. 

If your TypeWell's About screen does not show "Premium", then you must upgrade your TypeWell license to gain this feature.  This is an extra-cost feature that can be purchased from CodeWell as an addition to your license. 

Update the software on your transcriber computer to the newest version of TypeWell, by following the directions on the regular TypeWell download page. 

Then, get a new license key that supports the extra feature of linking with Pocket TypeWell.  Do this by signing in at the web site using the password that was emailed to you when your software was purchased.  This will take you to the TypeWell Licenses web page. 

At the TypeWell Licenses web page, locate a license that says TypeWell Premium Transcriber License.  If you have no such license, contact us by email to purchase an upgrade. 

Click the button to the right of the license you'd like to assign to this machine.  Fill out the information requested.  Type the displayed license key into your TypeWell program's Activation window, and click Activate.  The next time you open TypeWell, check its Help/About information to make sure that "Premium" is now activated. 

4. Setting up Wireless

You must use a wireless link to connect TypeWell on the Transcriber's computer to Pocket TypeWell on the iPAQ. Go to the wireless info page to see how you must set up the wireless connection on the notebook computer.

Follow these steps to set up wireless on the iPAQ.

1. Go to the Start menu and choose iPaq Wireless;
2. Push the WiFi button if necessary to turn it on;
3. (If a screen pops up saying New Network Detected, choose Hide);
4. Push the settings button to the right of the WiFi button, or the View WiFi Network link;
5. (If you see a screen that talks about Authentication, click OK, otherwise skip this step);
6. On the Wireless tab, change the Networks to access setting to Only computer-to-computer.
7. Click Add New...
8. Fill in the network name used for your TypeWell WiFi (see link to TypeWell wireless setup above).
9. Change Connects to to the setting Work.
10. Check the checkbox next to This is a device-to-device (ad-hoc) connection.
11. Click the Network Key tab.
12. Set Authentication to Open and Data Encryption to Disabled, or to whatever values match your TypeWell WiFi settings.
13. Click Ok.  This adds your new network to the list on the Settings page.
14. Push the Network Adapters tab;
15. Select HP iPAQ Wi-Fi Adapter;
16. Select Use specific IP address.
17. Enter 192.168.247.3 or whatever's appropriate for your setup as the IP address.
18. Make sure the subnet mask field is set to 255.255.255.0
19. Push OK several times to close everything.
20. You might have to then turn off the iPAQ and back on, to restart the wireless with the new settings.
21. Start Pocket TypeWell.
22. On the Link menu, click the item that says Wireless Mode Available, Disabled.  This turns on wireless linking.
23. Make sure wireless linking is enabled on the notebook computer.
24. In Pocket TypeWell, wait 15 seconds to see if the Link menu changes to Linked.

5. Configuring the iPAQ for the classroom

• Go to the iPAQ settings, choose the System tab, change backlight brightness to full, turn off dimming after 30 secs.  Use a lower level of backlight if you'll be using the iPAQ on batteries and battery life is a concern.
• Consider using Settings/System/Screen in landscape mode so you can set the iPAQ sideways.
• Change the clock settings to the current date and time.
• Mute sounds, by clicking the little speaker icon at the top.
• On the Tools menu in Pocket TypeWell, increase the font size as desired.
