Training Auditory and English Skill Reqiurements
(Back to the Qualifications page)
In addition to the typing speed requirement, it's very important that the trainee have good auditory and English skills.
Having good auditory skills means that the trainee is able to hear people who might not be talking too clearly, or when there's some other noise in the room.
If the trainee can't hear well, he or she won't be able to transcribe classes and meetings in a real-life environment, no matter how fast he or she types.
The trainee also needs to process auditory English well.
Those with any trouble understanding high-speed, spoken, complex English lectures, shouldn't do this job.
The trainee will not only need to rapidly understand English, but must be able understand the meaning of what was said, and restate it with rich detail, quickly and accurately.
The trainee must also have good English grammar and spelling skills.
As a transcriber he or she will be writing English as rapidly as possible.
There won't be time to think about rules of grammar.
If the trainee has to concentrate to get the grammar right, or his or her written grammar or spelling is poor, the job will be frustrating and the reader won't be able to easily understand what the trainee writes.
