The TypeWell software comes in several different versions.
This page focuses on the distinctions between these different versions.
See the Why link above for details about the unique advantages of the TypeWell system and software.
Standard Software Duo
Our best seller is the Standard Software Duo, which is a package that includes a Transcriber license
for the transcriber's computer and a Reader license for the reader's computer.
This is all the TypeWell software needed for one transcriber to provide access for one reader.
See below for details on the two components of this package.
Transcriber License
The transcriber uses the features of the Transcriber software to quickly type what is spoken so it can transmitted to the reader's computer for display.
One Transcriber license is typically needed for each computer used by a transcriber.
To keep the quality of TypeWell services high, we require that Transcriber software be used only by trained TypeWell transcribers.
The Transcriber software combines a full word processor, the TypeWell abbreviation system, and wireless linking, as well as:
- Our 200,000 word abbreviation dictionary; no extra-cost supplements for specialities, they're all built-in.
- Automatic data recovery; recovers the unsaved transcript if the battery runs out during a session.
- Instant-on connects automatically as soon as you turn TypeWell on.
- Direct linking keeps you connected even if the internet is not available.
- Fast typing of math and science symbols and formulas (New in version 5).
- One-key access to common functions for fastest transcribing.
Reader License
A reader uses the Reader software to read what is transmitted from the Transcriber's computer.
One Reader license is typically needed for each computer used by a reader.
It is possible to do without a Reader license by having a reader look over the shoulder of a transcriber.
However, it is desirable to have a separate Reader license if you can possibly make a second computer available, in order to allow the reader comfortable control of his or her seating position and text display.
To say it another way, the Transcriber software presents the text and controls in the best form for the transcriber's use, while the Reader software presents the text in the best form for the Reader's use, which is not the same.
The Reader software combines note-taking software, a custom display of the transcript, and wireless linking, as well as:
- Control of font and size to make the display comfortably readable.
- Reverse color display for readers who are visually challenged.
- Scrolling separately from the transcriber's ongoing transcription.
- Word processor window for notetaking.
- Talk-back to send comments and queries to the transcriber, who may voice them aloud if the reader desires.
- Instant-on links to transcriber automatically as soon as you turn TypeWell on.
- Direct linking keeps you connected even if the internet is not available.
- Reader notes can be saved by either the transcriber, or the reader.
Notetaker License
The transcriber uses the Notetaker software to type quickly in non-transcribing situations.
This is desirable for transcribers who would like to be able to use their TypeWell skills to enter text quickly on computers other than the one they use for transcribing, such as for use on the transcriber's work or home computer.
The Notetaker software does not have linking features and may not be used to provide communication access real-time transcripts.
The Notetaker software combines a word processor and the TypeWell abbreviation system:
- Our 200,000 word abbreviation dictionary; no extra-cost supplements for special areas. They're all built in.
- Automatic data recovery; recovers the unsaved text if the power goes out during a session.
- Fast typing of math and science symbols and formulas (New in version 5).
- One-key access to common functions for fastest typing.
Training Software
The TypeWell training software uses sophisticated adaptive teaching software in combination with a live teacher, to teach the entire job of transcribing to candidates who start with minimal requirements.
The training software is not sold by itself; it may be used only in conjunction with the training course.
Premium Software Duo
The Premium Duo is a package that includes one Premium Transcriber license
for the transcriber's computer and one Premium Reader license for the reader's computer.
This is all the TypeWell software needed for one transcriber to provide access for one reader.
The Premium version is desirable when you need one of its features (remote linking, pocket linking, or specialized linking configuration technical support) that the standard version does not have.
See below for details about the two components of this package.
Premium Transcriber License
The Premium Transcriber license has all the features of the standard Transcriber license as well as some specialized
additional features:
- Internet linking to a Premium Reader not at the lecture site (to support readers located remotely from the lecture site).
- Internet text and audio linking to a Premium Reader located at a remote lecture site (to support transcribers located remotely from the lecture site).
- Includes unlimited license to Pocket TypeWell, a reader product for use on Windows Mobile PDAs.
See the Pocket TypeWell section below for details.
(Note: Pocket TypeWell supports basic wireless linking only, and does not support math symbols, formulas, nor Internet linking.)
- Technical support for setting up specialized linking configurations.
The Premium version is desirable when you need one of its features (remote linking, pocket linking, or specialized linking configuration technical support) that the standard version does not have.
The remote linking features use TypeWell Premium's ability to transmit text and audio through a free Skype connection.
Be aware that remote services require special expertise to set up and use reliably.
Especially in the case of a transcriber located remotely from the lecture site, there are many hardware setup and training details to be addressed.
Please see the instructions for setting up remote transcribing for details.
Premium Reader License
The Premium Reader license has all the features of the standard Reader license as well as some specialized
additional features:
- Internet linking to a Premium Transcriber located at a remote lecture site (to support readers located remotely from the lecture site).
- Internet text and audio linking to a Premium Transcriber located away from the lecture site (to support transcribers located remotely from the lecture site).
- Technical support for setting up specialized linking configurations.
The Premium version is desirable when you need one of its features (remote linking, pocket linking, or specialized linking configuration technical support) that the standard version does not have.
See more about remote linking in the Premium Transcriber license section, above.
Pocket TypeWell
The Pocket TypeWell software is used on Windows Mobile or Pocket PC PDAs.
This software displays the transcript sent by the Premium Transcriber version of TypeWell.
This is for readers who prefer a PDA to a laptop as their reading device.
Pocket TypeWell is not sold directly; it is free to download, and up to 3 copies may be used in conjunction with each Premium Transcriber license.
Pocket TypeWell has certain restrictions:
- Pocket TypeWell works only with the Premium Transcriber license, not the standard Transcriber license.
- Pocket TypeWell does not support math symbols or formulas.
- Pocket TypeWell works only with a specially-configured wireless link; it does not work over the Internet.
- Depending on your laptop model, Pocket TypeWell may require that you have an additional laptop running with the Premium Reader software in order to get reliable Pocket TypeWell linking.
